Weight Loss Ulcerative Colitis
Weight loss in individuals who have ulcerative colitis is relatively common and there are a few reasons for this.
Ulcerative colitis (which is a chronic, colonic illness and requires mediation to ease symptoms) can cause people to have regular loose stools as well as intermittent diarrhea. This, in itself, does not cause rapid weight loss but these symptoms persist over an extended period, the ulcerative colitis sufferer will probably find that they lose weight.
In addition, those suffering from ulcerative colitis can also experience a loss of appetite which, in turn, causes them to lose more weight. The condition can also result in malabsorption of nutrients, causing health problems.
If you have ulcerative colitis, it is important to follow a highly nutritious eating plan that has been aimed at those with the condition. Such a special diet could involve avoiding certain foods and will also ensure that your body experiences as few flare ups as possible and will also prevent the loose stools and diarrhea that can cause you to be underweight.
Although weight loss is quite common among those with ulcerative colitis, it is not a desirable side effect as this can have long-term and chronic health implications.
